John Brown Limited Seminars
Successful Campaigns -- What Worked For Us
Learn from the masters who have led major campaigns in good and tough economic times.
Susan Feagin, President of John Brown Limited, is the former Executive Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations at Columbia University and Michael Margitich is the former Senior Deputy Director of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Both now serve their organizations in Special Advisor roles and also consult with non-profits on their fundraising efforts.
Who Should Attend: If you are directing a development program and want to know more about campaigns or if you are on a career path in development with an ambition to lead a campaign or play a key role in a campaign – this seminar is for you.
What You Will Learn: Susan and Mike, JBL co-presenters, believe that the work that goes into a successful campaign begins a long time before a public kick off. It’s about internal planning and leadership, and about board commitment and early engagement of potential donors.

The morning session will be a deep dive into the internal and external pre-campaign work that is essential to having a successful campaign. Using examples from their own experiences, they will talk candidly about how development leaders need to be involved in all aspects of planning and how they can influence the process whether they are formally part of it or not. They will share their views of developing the case for the campaign; when and how to do a feasibility study; ways to engage board and donors early in the planning process to get buy-in and lead gifts; and how to make your best arguments for budget and staffing support.
Susan and Mike will lead a working lunch conversation with the group about career development, offering examples from their own experiences, but also fielding all questions from seminar participants.
The afternoon session will focus on preparing for and conducting solicitations in a pre-campaign and campaign environment. Using cases based on real experiences, Mike and Susan will discuss how and with whom to discuss prospects strategies; how to prepare CEO and board members for the conversation; how to think about volunteer involvement in soliciting in 2012; and debrief and follow up strategies.
The day will conclude with a wrap-up discussion and final Q&A.
